Caring for Your Skin during the Menopause

Caring for Your Skin during the Menopause

Menopause officially begins one year after your last period. Along with the main signs, it can bring with it some noticeable changes to your skin and hair. As hormone levels fluctuate, your skin can become dry, thin, sensitive, spotty, less toned and slow healing.

However, with the right care, you can diminish these menopausal skin effects.

Here are a few tips to maintain beautiful skin during and after the menopause.

Dry skin

In menopause, skin loses some ability to hold water, so skin can get quite dry. This can be especially noticeable when the air is dry.

What you can do:

  • Wash with a mild cream cleanser instead of soap. For mature skin, soap can be too drying. Use a gently exfoliating cream cleanser like the Buttermilk Cleanser. This cleaner gently cleans  impurities and makeup while nourishing the skin.
  • Apply moisturizer morning and evening. A light hydrogel moisturizer that deeply nourishes the skin without leaving a greasy residue is ideal. Try the Rejuvenating Face Cream. This lipogel moisturiser disappears into the skin to nourish from within.

 Skin that Bruises Easily

As oestrogen levels fall, the skin becomes thinner. Thin skin bruises more easily.

What you can do:

Use a nourishing mask and moisturisers that creates a protective barrier and helps rebuild the skin. The Rejuvenating Face Mask is rich in nourishing honey which draws moisture in to thicken and heal the skin. The amino acids in the Rejuvenating Face Cream also helps nourish the layers of the skin, which thickens with regular use.

Sensitive and Easily Irritated Skin

Around age 50, the pH level of our skin changes. With this change, skin becomes more sensitive and reactive. If you have an existing skin condition, such as eczema or rosacea, this could worsen at this time.

What you can do:

  • Use products that are alcohol-free and free of synthetic fragrances. This greatly reduces irritation. The entire rage of Organic Apoteke products are alcohol-free and perfume free.

Pimples, Spots and Other types of Acne

As levels of female hormones change before and during menopause, some women develop teenage-like acne.

What you can do:

Because mature woman’s skin is thinner and drier than their teenage counterparts, be wary of trying products for teenage acne which are too harsh. Use more natural and gentle skin products.

  • Wash acne-prone skin with a gentle cleanser that contains lemon or other citrus ingredients. These gently clean the skin and unclog pores without drying the skin. The Active Face Cleanse Gel is a gentle foaming cleanser that deeply cleans without drying the skin. Rich in lemon oil its anti-bacterial action cleans pores while healing pimples.
  • Avoid acne products that dry your skin. Products that dry the skin can irritate the pores and cause more sebum production – both of these processes can worsen acne.

Jowls, loss of tone, and wrinkles

In menopause, skin quickly loses collagen. Studies show that women’s skin loses about 30% of its collagen during the first 5 years after of menopause. After that, the decline is more gradual. Women lose about 2% of their collagen ever year for the next 20 years.

As collagen diminishes, our skin loses it firmness and begins to sag. Jowls appear. Permanent lines run from the tip of the nose to the corners of the mouth. Wrinkles that used to appear only with a smile or frown become visible all the time. Later, the tip of the nose dips. You may see pouches under your eyes. Large pores may appear, these are also due to lack of skin firmness.

What you can do:

Use a serum that firms and tones the skin like the Rasayana Rejuvenating Serum. This serum is based on an ancient Ayurvedic practice of creating a Rasayan – a complex that promotes healing and regeneration of the bodies tissues.

Slow Healing Wounds

Hormones play an important role in healing our skin. When hormones levels fall, skin takes longer to heal.

What you can do:

  • Know that your skin will heal, do not aggressively use harsh treatment products or steroids as these can further delay healing.
  • Use products with therapeutic essential oils that stimulate cellular healing. The Organic Apoteke range is rich in therapeutic essential oils.

By following these simples practices, you can keep skin looking and feeling beautiful during and after the menopause.
